In my first fantasy football mock draft this season, I wanted to see how long I could hold out on taking a QB in these RB scarce times. I was able to hold off until roud five and I felt pretty good about my core group of starters (Jamaal Charles, Chris Johnson, Roddy White, Percy Harvin, Colin Kaepernick, Jason Witten). This seems to be the mainstream thought this season. With that, in Mock Draft #2, I’m going to go QB earlier and see how it impacts the rest of my roster. For comparisons sake, we are going to slot in the #8 pick again.
.8 Ray Rice: It looked like I was going to be faced with the decision of Calvin Johnson in the first round, but thankfully he went #6. I didn’t see myself getting anything for RB if I took him and waited until the second round.
.5 Chris Johnson: I really wanted A.J. Green here, but he went two picks earlier. Staying true to my rankings, Johnson lands here and I’m going to be scraping for WR if I go QB early.
.8 Peyton Manning: Rodgers went mid second round, Brees at the top of the first. For the sake of the strategy, I went QB here but I would have liked WR. The next five picks after me were WR.
.5 Vincent Jackson: Already having buyers remorse, but this is why we are doing it, right? I definitely could have waited until the 4th round for QB and been more comfortable with my WR#1.
.8 Antonio Brown: We have to keep this WR train rolling now without stopping.
.5 Steve Smith: Feeling a little pain in my gut.
.8 Dennis Pitta: This is right around his ADP, so not too bad.
.5 Kenny Britt: I will never feel complete at WR in this draft.
.8 Bryce Brown: Things are getting real thin.
.5 Denarius Moore: With the short responses, you can tell I’m less than enthused, huh?
.8 Pierre Thomas: I love the thought of Thomas this year. People are thinking Ingram, but Thomas has a lot of reasons to be considered.
.5 Baltimore Defense: The Top Ds are gone and there is a run this round. Going ahead and taking one since the rest of my roster is expendable.
.8 Sam Bradford: Barring injury to Manning, there will only be one week he isn’t starter. I also had that theory a couple years back…
.5 Giants D: Spot filler
.8 Randy Bullock: I actually usually go kicker a round or two earlier and do put thought into the position. I did have Bullock as my #2-3 kicker though, so…deal.
I definitely could have waited until the 4th round in this fantasy football mock draft and likely ended up with Manning anyway in this draft and position. Watching WRs go off the board in the next five picks after Manning was very painful. I also have to consider if I really want to go RB-RB in the first two rounds. While I feel good at the position for starters, I never stopped trying to play catch up at WR. Dez Bryant, Brandon Marshall, and Julio Jones were all options in round #2.
